
How to Get to Punta Arenas
Gateway to the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica
Punta Arenas, located in the southernmost part of Chile, is the main gateway to southern Patagonia and Chilean Antarctica. Although it is far from major world capitals, getting there is straightforward if you follow these steps.
Step 1:
Arrive in Chile
(Santiago)
Most international flights arrive at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) in Santiago, Chile.
There are direct flights or single-connection options from cities such as Madrid, Paris, London, New York, Miami, Mexico City, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires.
If your international flight arrives in another Chilean city, you will still need to connect to a domestic flight to Punta Arenas.
Step 2:
Take a Flight to Punta Arenas
From Santiago, you will need to take a domestic flight to Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport (PUQ) in Punta Arenas.
- Approximate flight duration: 3 hours and 15 minutes
- Frequency: several daily flights
- Main airlines: LATAM and Sky Airline
It is recommended to book in advance during high season (October to March), especially if you are traveling during the austral summer.
Step 3:
Arrival in Punta Arenas
The airport is located approximately 20–25 minutes from the city center.
Options to reach your accommodation:
- Shared transfer
- Taxi
- Private transfer service
- Car rental (recommended if you plan to explore the region)

Step 4:
Within the Magallanes Region

Once in Punta Arenas, you can travel across the different provinces of the region and enjoy their wide range of activities.
