About 95 kilometers from Punta Arenas, on the coast of Riesco Island, Estancia Fitz Roy offers an authentic experience to discover rural life in Chilean Patagonia. This place invites you to travel back in time and get a close look at Magallanes countryside traditions, surrounded by open landscapes, native wildlife, and a history deeply tied to livestock ranching and life at the southern edge of the world.
The experience begins with a journey that combines an overland route and a short ferry crossing to Riesco Island—already hinting at the unique character of the day. Upon arrival at the estancia, visitors are welcomed with warm southern hospitality before setting off on a guided tour of the property’s main facilities.
During the visit, you can explore old shearing sheds, corrals, the main house, workers’ quarters, tool and engine rooms, and a remarkable museum that preserves more than 4,000 artifacts and stories spanning over a century of the island’s ranching and mining history. The tour also includes a unique chapel built with native wood and cart wheels, reflecting the ingenuity and identity of the area’s early settlers.
The experience features demonstrations of traditional hand shearing with scissors, sheep-handling activities, carriage rides, and time to observe local flora and fauna—always in a calm, welcoming atmosphere. One of the most anticipated moments is the traditional Patagonian lunch, featuring spit-roasted lamb (cordero al palo), potatoes, salads, homemade bread, pebre, homemade desserts, and beverages—allowing you to enjoy not only the flavors, but also the region’s culture.
The day ends with a countryside afternoon tea, accompanied by homemade cookies and cakes, turning the visit into a complete, close-to-home experience deeply connected to the traditions of the end of the world.
