Parque Marino Francisco Coloane

Whale-watching season: December to April.

At the southernmost tip of Chile lies a marine sanctuary where the ocean becomes the stage for one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring natural spectacles: the feeding of humpback whales—the giants of the sea. Francisco Coloane Marine Park protects more than 67,000 hectares of fjords, channels, and open waters, and is recognized as Chile’s first marine park.
Between December and April, this area turns into a true marine-life highway, with sightings of humpback, and sei whales, as well as sea lions, austral dolphins, and a wide diversity of ocean birds. From the boat, it’s also possible to spot colonies of Magellanic penguins nesting in forested areas, along with the intense flight of petrels, albatrosses, and Antarctic terns.
As this is a protected area with controlled access, visits are conducted exclusively through registered tour operators.
